DENIAL IS A RIVER: VIDEO

Denial is a River dropped just yesterday, and I needed a moment to take it all in. Once again, Doechii has delivered a music video that defies expectations. After all the promo highlighting the star-studded cast, I wasn’t sure if this was going to feel more like a short film than a music video. To my delight, it struck the perfect balance—staying true to the music video format while brilliantly bringing the story behind the song to life.

Even though we got a sneak peek of the cast in the trailer, I was still eager to see how they’d be featured. And let me tell you—they were put to excellent use. Zack Fox shined as Doechii’s boyfriend, while Ricky Thompson stole the show as “wifey.” Their performances added humor and depth, elevating the video’s storytelling.

One standout element was the seamless set changes, which reflected the various time periods highlighted throughout the song. It’s a detail that not only enhances the visuals but also deepens the connection to the story Doechii is telling.

With Denial is a River, Doechii proves once again that she’s not just making music—she’s creating art. Check it out and let us know your thoughts!

Regardless if you like Doechii or the song Denial is a River, you can’t deny that storyteling in music videos is an element that has been missing over the last few years.

MAKE IT MAKE SENSE - & this makes sense.

Director Carlos Acosta and James Mackel did an outstanding job capturing the essence of classic black 90s sitcom like Family Matters, Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, Living Single, Martin and many more.

Overall, it’s worth a watch and we’re certainly looking forward to more visuals from Doechii.
